Agnes Canna & Sisters - Bray - Rathdown
« on: Sunday 31 July 11 10:10 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Canna familes
Andrew Canna married Philomena Byrne between 1872 & 1876.
Their children were, Philomena 1877, Rosanna 1883 and Agnes, 1885.
Philomena married Stephen Dalton in 1900 in Wicklow
Rosanna married Richard Henry Matthews in Co Offaly 1908
Agnes married Jan/March 1908 in Ratdown. Looking for the name of her husband and to know if they had children. The same again for Philomena & Stephen Dalton. I know they had a daughter called Edith Agnes Dalton in 1905/1906.
All help will be much appreciated.

Unless you have some clues to her husbands names, you would need to order a marriage cert for Agnes to establish who she married. Probably the best way to start the search on Philomena & Stephen Dalton would be to try to locate them on the 1911 census return.

To search for later children for the couples (i.e. after 1911) would just be a case of trying certs that fit the timeframe, possible naming patterns and locations..

for reference here's Stephen & Philomena on the 1901 (with Agnes Canna) and 1911 (with daughter Edit Agnes) census returns.

  Dalton/Canna household, Hudson's Tce - 1901

Dalton household, Aberdeen St - 1911

Canna is a very unusual name:

Search on: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

And you will see it only rewturns 26 individuals in 1911. Just in case they are all related you might make a note of this, even though it appears unrelated at present:

Rootsireland.ie has a marriage listed for Andrew Canagh and Philomena Byrne in 1872, Kilquade (RC).

Listed on the same site are:-
Children Baptised in Kilquade (RC) with the above parents:

Elizabeth Canagh         1872
Bridget Canagh            1874
Christopher Cannah     1876
Philomena Canna         1877
Agnes Canna                1885

It would seem that Rosanna Canna was baptised in Bray (RC) in 1883 -parents listed as above.

Kilquade Parish is approx. six or seven miles from Bray.

Kilquade is in the Civil registration district of Rathdrum, so this is probably the same marriage.

Thank you all for your valued help. I had been through the 1901 and 1911 census records.
What I really appreciate is knowing that I have the correct family and that they all link together. Rosanna Canna and her husband Richard Henry Matthews were living very close to the Daltons in the 1911 census for Bray. Their first child, Charles Henry Matthews was born in Bray 13.12.1908 and shown on the census.
I will send off for a marriage certificate for Agnes.
Was interested to see the spelling of the surname seems to have changed from Canagh to Canna
Is it possible to find out about Andrew Canna, i.e. who his parents and siblings were and he same for Philomena Byrne.
I know that Andrew Canna was shown as a carpenter, when Rosanna was born in April 1883.
Thank you once again for all the assistance, which as ever is much appreciated.

The marriage cert for Andrew and Philomena will give details on their fathers - the parish record has been mentioned by Wicklow Way, the civil references are :

  Name:   Andrew Canagh
  Registration district:   Rathdrum
  Event type: Marriage
  Year: 1872
  Volume :   2 / Page :   973

  Name: Philomena Byrne
  [same references as Andrew]

Once you know Andrew's father's name you could try further searches of the Kilquade records to see if Andrew and any siblings were baptised there.

given how rare the Canna/Canagh surname is in the area ... maybe this William Canagh is a brother or cousin or your Andrew ?  If so this extracted marriage for him on FamilySearch might be worth following up :

  Name: William Canagh
  Registration district:   Rathdrum
  Event type:   Marriage
  Year: 1868
  Volume :   17 / Page : 937

extracted civil marriage :

  Groom: William Canagh  / age 24   (c1844) / single
  Bride: Anne Kelly / age 21 (c1847) / single
  Marriage date: 15 Nov 1868
Marriage place: Kilquade, Co. Wicklow, Ireland
  Groom's father: William Canagh
  Bride's father:   Patrick Kelly

another marriage for a possible relation :

  Groom: Thomas Canah / age 30   (c1838)
  Bride: Bridget Kearns / age 21  (c1847)
  Marriage date: 14 Sep 1868
  Marriage place: Newcastle, Wicklow, Ireland
  Groom's father: Andrew Canah
  Bride's father: Thomas Kearns
