Cawley - Belmullet, possibly Inishkea
« on: Sunday 31 July 11 19:30 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my husband's family.
His grandmother was Mary Ann Cawley (1888-1970s), who left Belmullet for the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area in the early 1900s. Not sure she knew where she would end up, she left to avoid a marriage to an older man!
Her father was Pat(rick) Cawley of Tallagh, Belmullet, her mother Mary Walsh(e) of Inishkea.
There were older brothers
Anthony 1882-1884
Michael 1883
Martin 1884-1887
Patrick 1886
and a younger sister Kate 1889

I believe Mary Walshe was the daughter of Pat Walshe and Anne (Nan) Dunbar.
I think Patrick Cawley's father was Anthony - possibly Cauley.

Grateful for any contact or tips.
Kind regards
Andrea

Hello Andrea,

You already have a lot of information. Do you have the family in censuses? This looks like them.

1901 Cauley family

1911 Cauley family

best wishes
heywood

Thanks for the reply.
I got Mary Ann's father from her marriage certificate (1914)  and that took me to the Irish censuses. She was in Newcastle in 1911. Found a baptism and birth for her and her parents marriage on mayoancestors.
Can't find a birth for her father Patrick to get any further back, or prove that he came from Inishkea originally.
A contact in the US has a copy of a book about Inishkea and found Pat Walsh and his wife in that.
I'm hoping to get back another generation or 2, but realise it's not as easy for Irish ancestors as British.
