The address at burial helpfully ties into the 1881 census entry for the family enumerated as "Howard".

This is very curious - he uses the KILPATRICK surname for all birth/marriage/death registrations (plus children's baptisms), but records himself and his family as HOWARDs on all censuses (except the 1911 when he reverts to KILPATRICK)!

Richard ... can you throw any light on this?

It is certainly a mysterious one!

One bit I'm stuck on is the birth of son Frank in abt 1857-1859 and his whereabouts in 1861. He married in Northampton in 1878 as Frank HOWARD and appears in that name later on.
