Gosh you've got a lot of Cullens!!

My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Cullen but they were all born in Keighley, Yorkshire and originate in Ireland but I don't know where.

It's amazing actually because in September last year I was looking for a death for Cecilia Cullen, my father's aunt, and found that she had died only a month before in August 2010, aged 102!  Ancestry actually had the death notice.  It said she didn't want flowers but donations to the care home she had lived in.  I Googled the care home and found an email address so I sent an email saying that Cecilia was my Dad's aunt, although he never new her, and I would have loved to have met her had I known she was still alive until August.  I also said that if any of the family wanted to get in touch I would love this and to please pass on my condolences to the family and also give them my details.  I received a very nice email from Cecilia's grandson and we've kept in touch.

Regarding Dad, his Mum Ellen Maria Cullen died of TB when he was only 8 months old and he was then brought up by an aunt and uncle, who never had any children of their own.  He had an older brother George Bentley who was born in Oct-Nov-Dec 1921 yet I cannot find any records (apart from his birth) for him.  They were born in Glossop and there is a marriage record of a George Bentley to a Janet M Henderson in Glossop, which might be him.  Their father went on to Marry Mary Swift and have 3 more children and I have managed to put one of them in touch with Dad.

My Mum passed away last Tuesday aged 90, after being ill for some time,  and to I am going out to Cyprus for two weeks for the funeral and to support Dad.  I won't be doing any family history for a while.

The mention of a Cullen line from Keighley was exciting as it seems to link into my line of Cullens from Sligo. The relevant family is that of Henry Cullen married to Bridget Culkin who had 9 children, 2 of whom died during the Famine. The children were Henry Cullen married to Mary Dyer, Patrick Cullen emigrated to USA via Canada married to Mary Doolan, Bridget Cullen married to Luke Dwyer, Peter Cullen emigrated to Durham, John Cullen and Michael Cullen - no info as yet. The last member was Mary Cullen, born 1851, had John born 31/5/1872, birth occurring in Temple House, who after staying with her sister Bridget for a while emigrated to Keighley.
I have more information on this line of Cullens, based on the townlands of Creevaun, Shancough, Carrownacarrick, several of whom emigrated to Durham in England, others to Lake, Illinois.
