More Bowdlers
« on: Tuesday 02 August 11 09:32 BST (UK) »
I am looking for descendants or information on Hannah (Cole), Richard, James, Henry, George and
Helen (Icke) children of Humphrey and Elizabeth Bowdler of Madeley. Their younger brother, Thomas and his
family migrated to Australia in 1861.

How far have you got following them (those that stayed in England) through the censuses? We dont want to duplicate what you already have done.
Years of birth for them?

To lizdb

Parents married in 1808, Hannah c 1809, Richard c 1810, James c 1812, Henry c 1815, George c 1817,
Helen born 1823 and Thomas 1826. Only information on Hannah is from the 1871 census where she is
living with her sister and husband. No information on Richard, James or George. Know Henry married
Mary Ann Davies in 1835. Have a bit more on Helen, have her marriage certificate for 1846 and some
information from the 1871 and 1881 census.

Starting with 1851 I see there are LOTS of Bowdlers in Madeley, or born Madeley, so I guess they all link in somewhere!
But looking specifically at the names and dates you give, they are rather scarce!

HO107 1959 31 568
Nelson Inn
Hannah 42 unm Beerhouse keeper
Elizabeth 64 widow mother bn Market Drayton
James 7 nephew
+ lodger

I wonder who James parents are?
(next door is another Bowdler family, John and Mary with widowed father Audley with them. )

HO107 2036 13 19
Wordsley, Kingswinford, Staffs
Thomas 26 Engineer bn MAdeley
Elizabeth 25 bn Kingswinford
Martin 2 bn Kin.
Austin 10mths bn Kin.

The others are eluding me. I wonder if they emigrated first, and then Thomas followed ?

Just nipping back to 1841 I see Humphrey was still alive

HO107 928 15
Madeley

Humphrey 60 Ag lab Y
Elizabeth 55  Y
Ellen 15   Y
Thomas 14   Y

The grown up children are harder to place, with ages being rounded and there being so many Bowdlers, it is hard to be sure any are the right ones.

Here is Humphrey's death:

OK! Armed with all this extra info, I'm going back to 1851 to fill in some gaps!

1851
H0107 2036 58 16
Bug Road Kingswinford Staffs
Henry 35 Engineer bn Madeley
Mary Ann 37 bn Staford Tipton
Edwin 10 bn K
Ann Matilda 6 bn K
Henry 2 mths bn K

(I wonder where Joseph was - should be aged 4, as 14 in 1861?)

At least we can see what happened to Henry up to 1861 - he moved to Kingswinford in Staffordshire! ANd had children Edwin, Ann Matilda, Joseph, Henry, Abraham and Rachel.
Once I have got everyone up to 1861 I will move forward to 1871 ....
