Daniel Smith info
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 16:38 BST (UK) »
Hi, i am wondering if anyone has any info on Daniel Smith from Gravesend, Kent He was born approx 1930, was a miner, moved to Australia approx 1961...? Died approx 1970-72. My family for some reason are very secretive and won't tell me much... i am looking for someone maybe related and trying to find his parents name and so forth. Why did it have to be Smith Lol, why not something less common? :)

Did he marry in Australia or England?  Were all their children born in Australia or were some born in England?

We are not allowed to give details of anybody who may still be living (children) so in general terms:

Freebmd has no birth for him in Gravesend up to 1941 www.freebmd.org.uk so it's possible he was born elsewhere and perhaps just lived in Gravesend

If you know who he married and where, a copy of his marriage cert will give his fathers name (if in England) and both parents names if he perhaps married in Scotland

If you don't know his wife's name but do know the details of any children born in England, you can search freebmd for their births as their mothers maiden name will be shown against the entry

Ok, I think I have some information.  There is a marriage registration for a Daniel G SMITH in the Chatham district in the December quarter of 1947 ref. 5b 604.  If he married in a local C of E church then you may be able to find it in the online parish registers http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

There were, at that time, lots of parishes/churches in the Chatham district so quite a number to look through http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/chatham.html

There were several birth registrations in the Dartford district during the 1950s name of SMITH with maiden name which matches that found on the marriage (link below).  I have removed the names you mention as we don't allow mention of possible living persons but they match those I found.

Update - marriage http://www.rootschat.com/links/0eim/

A marriage in 1947 would suggest he was born earlier than 1930

Possible birth

Looking at Smith/Davies marriage in Merthyr prior to 1928 throws up a lot of possibilities but you may want to bear this one in mind - but there are at least 10 other possibilities depending on when his parents married

Now we have an age for him, I rather favour Daniel G SMITH born June quarter 1923 Rotherham (Yorkshire) district ref. 9c 1390 with maiden name of mother LIND.

Further SMITH children with a LIND mother which might fit:

Lilly M 1921 Rotherham, Yorkshire
Daniel G (as above) 1923
Derrick J 1925 Rotherham, Yorkshire
Desmond L 1929 Eastry, Kent
Donald O E 1931 Eastry, Kent

Daniel SMITH m Lilly M A LIND September quarter 1920 Rotherham, Yorkshire ref. 9c 1899

The dates could certainly coincide with a miner moving down to the East Kent coalfields in the 1920s but it would need checking out

Does any of it ring any bells ???
