Thanks again - I think Brightlingsea was known for Oyster fishing at the time which possibly accounts for the fact that there only seems to be a crew of 4 on board.

And the Alfred Gooch I'm after was born in Islington (father Alfred as well).  So a bit intrigued how he ended up fishing (if that's what it is).

The charles baston who was mate on the vessel  I looked him up and In 1901 he was on a barge called the Old Goody in ramsgate harbour His wife Hannah was on board too so looks like Alfred was likely to be on a barge Perhaps there is a record of which barges were moored in Brightlingsea Unless you look at the original which will cost you 30 credits It hopefully will give you the name of tthe vessel and you can look it up
