Grandad's Grave
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 16:47 BST (UK) »
I cannot find where my Grandad is buried! He died 09/11/1913 in Mint Street Workhouse Southwark. There was a Coroner's report and my Grandmother declared that she had insurance. The burial entry says 'buried by friends'. I have tried all the cemeteries around Southwark and its area and the cemetery where Mint Street Occupants were taken to. There is no record of his burial. Where do I go from here.

His name was Charles Knight born in Bow in December 1874 son of Edward and Caroline Knight nee Stephens. My grandmother was Emily Adeline Knight nee Griggs.

Hi, and welcome to Rootschat.  I'm confused - not difficult, I know  :D

You say the burial entry states "buried by friends" and so if you have that information, surely you must also have the cemetery/graveyard!

hi,sometimes a death notice would be put in the local newspaper, which would have the place of burial, maybe your grandmother did that?If so,local libraries usually have old newspapers on microfilm to search.

Although that seems a good place to search apart from the insurance money my Grandmother did not have much money. I do not think she would have put an entry into the newspaper but as there was a coroner's report there may have been one filed by a reporter. However, a few months ago when I searched for copies of the South London Press for that time I did not seem to be able to find papers for that time. I will persevere and see what I can find but I have searched many avenues to find his grave and seem to hit a brickwall.

Could your grandad have been a Quaker?
I wonder if the reference to friends was shorthand for The Religious Society of Friends.

Could he have been cremated rather than buried?
Are there any Quaker burial grounds in the vicinity?
Cheers

I am certain he was not a Quaker but assumed the phrase was a general term used when a person was not buried by the council. We believe his paternal grandmother was Jewish but ahe would not have had any influence on his religious persuasion. He was baptised along with several of his siblings as a group baptism - like a job lot.
But thanks for the suggestion.
