I have three certificates belonging to John Patterson. One is his Master Mariner certificate and the other two are his initiation certificates into Royal Arch Chapter in Calcutta.

I see that his son William was born on 12 November 1855 in Kirkcudbright. Scottish 1855 birth certificates contain extra information not collected in any other year. In particular it should confirm John Pat(t)erson's age and birthplace, if you need such confirmation.

Possibly a silly question, but did you try Paterson instead of Patterson?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
