Hi  :)

Galloway was Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire but at the moment I can't make out the place.

Can you  say where they were.

Hi Gnu,

Yes, he gives Stranraer in the 1851 but not in 1861 ?

I am interested in his birthplace given in the 1861 Census as I have yet to find his birth certificate or determine his parents.

Hi Dulaigh,

Yes I can also see Fort William but that appears to lie outwith Gallowayshire as far as I know.

Many Thanks on your efforts

Best Regards

Ron

Hi Ron  :)

It might well be Port William

On this map:

gnu

Added - at a guess the parish would be Mochrum

It might be best to look for a death cert rather than a baptism - what was the last census that you have him on?

Hi Gnu,

Many thanks, great spot  ;D

Port William definitely appears a possibility and still in Wigtownshire.

I checked the Census and it still looks like it starts with an F as in the name Falkirk also listed on this sheet. He may have said Port William and it has been written down as the more well known Fort William by the person taking the Census.

I quickly checked the IGI and there is a William Hamilton born in Mochrum in 1803, 13 years out but I am not discounting it as he was only 53 when he died.

Best Regards

Hi

There's a William Hamilton on the IGI born 4 October 1818 at Leswalt (which is Stranraer), Wigtown, born of Gawin Hamilton and Isabella Martin.

Does this help?

Judy
Blair, Marshall, Williamson - Ayrshire, Wigtownshire
Saxton, Sketchley - Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire
Brown, Green - Rutland
Hawker, Malone, Bradbury, Arnott, Turner, Woodings, Blakemore, Upton, Merricks - Warwickshire, Staffordshire
Silvers, Dudley, Worcs
Deakin - Staffordshire

Hi Judy,

No Gawin's in the three of his five sons that I have discovered so far.

There's four William Hamilton's born in a 20 year period 1810 +/- 10 years on IGI for Wigtownshire
