The De Silva Povoas baptisms & marriages were in Anglican churches.

Yes but perhaps Antonio's wife Charlotte Bishop was an Anglican and jewish heritage goes down the female line!

However, the Jewish Ancestry is only hearsay passed down through several branches of the family but seems some truth may be in it as the family likenesses certainly have a jewish look about them.

I'm hoping tonight's Who Do You Think You Are might have some clues.  It is about June Brown (from Eastenders) whose ancestors were Sephardic Jews who travelled to many countries before settling in England.

Hi GCE if you just search "Antonio da Silva Povoas" on google books (with the quotes) it should be the first hit.
Also have a look at http://www.sephardim.com/ , perhaps.

Who were the witnesses and what was the address for the 1869 marriage?

The address was given as South Hackney for both of them and the witnesses were Elizabeth Stephens - Caroline's mother - funnily enough she gave her maiden name despite being married to Joseph Day. Caroline was illegitimate - her father was William Hellier. The other witness was John Jackson who we believe Edward John worked with in the Gunmaking Factory in the East End.

Thanks for the Sephardic Jews site - makes interesting reading.

Being really technically incompetent today and still cannot do the google books site!! :-[

Please would you  set it out simply so I can access it - thanks!
Thanks for being patient and really helpful - I really appreciate it!

Hi GCE

Try this link:

http://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&tbo=1&q=%22Antonio+da+Silva+Povoas%22&btnG=

I got there by putting 'Google Books' into Google's search engine, going onto the Google Books site and then entering "Antonio da Silva Povoas" complete with quotation marks into the search box.

Hope that helps  :)
