WANDSWORTH LUNATIC ASYLUM (SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL) 1891 CENSUS
« on: Monday 08 August 11 19:54 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I am trying to find my great-great-grandmother ESTHER WRIGHT (1820 - 1900) who was committed to Middlesex Lunatic Asylum (St Bernard's) in c.1875, and then transferred to WANDSWORTH LUNATIC ASYLUM (Springfield Hospital) around 1890, where she died in 1900.

I am unable to find her in the 1891 census, in fact I'm finding it very hard to find the hospital in the 1891 census at all. I wondered if maybe patients were only referred to by their initials ...

Can anyone help ? I very much want to place this last piece of the jigsaw, as I now have her death certificate from 1900.

Many thanks as always!
FW

That was the case with many such asylums so tracing is difficult

Here is the 1891 reference for the hospital

RG12 Piece 451 Folio 45 Page 1

I used Hugh Gardiner Hill to find it - see http://www.studymore.org.uk/4_13_ta.htm#Springfield

If you forward to Page 25 - that's when the female patients start - all initials

There is an EW aged 70 on page 41
