 thank you for the needed clarity. i had assumed that when
 the french surrendered in 1763 that the 18th was with the 42nd when they
 took possession in 1765.

 i wonder if the 18th were the engineers who attempted to control the river erosion?

They were a Infantry regiment of the line (not engineers although they may have had some sappers with them)
