Baptism Ann Gleeson
« on: Thursday 11 August 11 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am searching for the baptism of Ann Gleeson. Census Records for 1871, 1881 and 1891 give her place of birth as Willington Northumberland. She was born bet 1867 and 1870, (census records vary), and her parents both came from Ireland. The family were Roman Catholics so perhaps Ann was baptised at either the church of Our Lady and St Columba, or Our Lady and St Aiden.

Ann was my grandmother. She married John Thomas Chestney in Durham in Apr 1894. Ann moved to South Shields, Durham, after her marriage. She was buried in South Shields Dec 1940.

I know it's not much to go on but until I find her baptism I can't be sure who her parents were. There are about three different families in the Willington/Wallsend area who are possible matches for Ann/Annie.

Thank you for your time

Maureen

Doesn't the census give a clue? ;D

This is the only Ann/e Gleeson I can find in Northumberland, who was born in 1870.

1871; reference RG10, Piece 5109, Folio 36, Page 20
High Street East, Wallsend, Northumberland

Gleeson, Thomas  Head  M  22  Labourer  b Ireland
Gleeson, Anne  Wife  F  23  b Ireland
Gleeson, Mary  Daughter  F  9 months  b Wallsend
Gleeson, Anne  Daughter  F  9 months  b Wallsend

Except, of course, that Willington is in County Durham?! ;D

So, 1881 census:
Reference RG11, 4946, 25, 16
14 Cornsay Colliery, Stable Row, Cornsay, Co. Durham

Gleeson, John  Head  M  58  Coal Miner  b Ireland
Gleeson, Catherine  Wife  F  50  b Ireland
Gleeson, John  Son  M  21  Coal Miner  b Willington, Durham
Gleeson, Mary  Daughter  F  19  b Willington
Gleeson, Cotren  Daughter  F  17  b Willington
Gleeson, Anny  Daughter  F  14  Scholar  b Willington
Gleeson, Jane  Daughter  F  13  b Willington
Gleeson, Elizabeth  Daughter  F  11  b Willington

Following this Ann Gleeson through the census returns up to 1911, her place of birth is nearly always quoted as Willington, Co. Durham.
Her age, and therefore year of birth, is also remarlably consistent 1868 +/- a year.

Maybe this is her birth registration? A bit early, though?

September qtr 1865
Durham district (which includes Willington)    vol 10a, page 304

Gleason, Ann

I don't have her marriage certificate, just the FreeBMD Marriage Index, and so details of her father do not appear. Tell me, if I order a copy of my grandfather's marriage certificate, (spouse of Ann Gleeson), would it give me the name of Ann's father?

Many thanks for replying.

It should do!

If she was illegitimate, there maybe no father mentioned, but normally you will find:

Full names of bride & groom
Their ages & marital status
Addresses at time of marriage
Occupationm of both

Full names of both fathers
Occupation of both fathers

Names of witnesses - could provide clues to family?

All post 1837 marriage certificates have the names and occupations of both fathers (where known).  When there is doubt of parentage, as in this case, it is an essential step to find the marriage details either by discovering the church record or ordering from the GRO.  It will be money well spent and can save hours of research as well as being positive proof that you are on the right line.

Willington was one of the three " townships" that made up the parish of Wallsend, in the county of Northumberland. ( Howden Pans and Wallsend were the other two)

Births deaths and marriages up to 1936 would have been registered within the Tynemouth Registration District.
