The births of a Mary and Ann Gleeson were registered with Tynemouth Reg District in the September Quarter of 1870.  This would match the Gleeson daughters from census info.

You could pursue your search for the appropriate church baptism or obtain a copy of Ann's birth registration.

Thank you for your help David. I'm planning a trip to Durham in November to do some research on the Chestney/Gleeson families. At least now I'll know where to look.

regards
Maureen

Maureen,

Willington, Wallsend etc are in Northumberland. Why are you heading for Durham.   I must be missing something !

Because, on most of the censuses the place of birth is Willington, County Durham.

It's a village close to Durham city ;D ;D

We have family there and I'm visiting them whilst doing some research on my grandfather, John Chestney, born in South Shields. The Chestney's were stone masons, and quarry labourers. The family originated in Sheringham Norfolk before settling in Westoe, and then South Shields.

My cousin, who lives in the centre of Durham, has offered to do some research for me - Northumberland is a lot closer to him than Staffordshire is for me. I hope to visit Northumberland whilst I'm up north, though.
Regards M

KG kindly provided you with a 1871 census ( 5109-36-20) details of an Ireland-born couple , Thomas and Anne Gleeson, with twin daughtersMary and Anne,  born in Wallsend, Northumberland, in 1870.

And details of 1881 census ( 4946-25-16) of another Ireland-born couple, John and Catherine Gleeson, with children including Ann, born c1865 in Willington, County Durham.

If your interest lies in the Willington, County Durham, Ann Glesson, then there seems little point in searching for the appropriate baptism in the RC churches
of Our Lady and St Colomba, in Wallsend, Northumberland and/or Our Lady and St Aidan which was/is in Willington in Northumberland.

I hope my banging on about Willington in Northumberland ( there's another 4 Willingtons around England) has not deflected your search.

( In 1881 the Wallsend Gleesons are in Walker, Northumberland,( 5084-78-50), in 1871 the Willington Co Durham Gleesons, are in Cornsay, (4958-107-43)

1871; reference RG10, Piece 5109, Folio 36, Page 20
High Street East, Wallsend, Northumberland

Gleeson, Thomas  Head  M  22  Labourer  b Ireland
Gleeson, Anne  Wife  F  23  b Ireland
Gleeson, Mary  Daughter  F  9 months  b Wallsend
Gleeson, Anne  Daughter  F  9 months  b Wallsend

Family beta has following christenings these seem to tie in with 1871 census

Anna Gleeson b 14/7/1870 ch 24/7/1870 Willington Quay Northumberland
Maria Gleeson b14/7/1870 ch 24/7/1870   "                  "
Thomas 30/10/1872 ch 10/11/1872             "                " (possibly died Tynemouth 1874) ?
Father  Thomoe Gleeson
Mother  Annoe Clohosey Gleeson (This is how the names have been spelt)

**EDIT**

from your post "She married John Thomas Chestney in Durham in Apr 1894"

don't think it's the above Ann Gleeson on 1871c as she's aged 30 on the 1901 census with her widowed father Thomas sister Mary age 30 and seven other siblings

I'd like to thank everyone for their help. It's much appreciated and has given me food for thought.
I think my best course of action is to order my grandfather's marriage certificate which will, hopefully, give me the name of my grandmother's father.

When I have that I will know which family to research. I'm hoping the certificate will say which part of Ireland my great grandparents came from as Gleeson is a common name. I seem to recall my mother saying it was Dublin but it was over sixty years ago and I was quite young.

If only I had paid more attention to the things my parents told me! But that's children for you.

I think the hardest part of my research will be tracing ancestors from Ireland.

Thank you all for your time

Regards

Maureen
