Help in finding my 2x Greatgrandfather
« on: Thursday 11 August 11 19:06 BST (UK) »
Any advice would be appreciated in finding who the correct parents are of my greatgrandfather:

Walter George King born c1880 in Lambeth Surrey.

On the 1911 census he is with Susan and 4 children, Walter, Violet, Albert and David Purdon son from previous marriage living in Islington.

Susan Louisa Clare born 1872 in Lambeth Surrey.( marries Joseph Purdon in 1895 in Lambeth).

There are several Walter George King's born around 1880 in Surrey. My question is how do I ever find out who the correct parents are as I can't research any further.

I cannot find a marriage for Walter to Susan which of course would have given me his father's name.
I suspect that Susan was still legally married to Joseph Purdon.

What was Walters occupation in 1911, may help to narrow down search for 1901.

He was a fishfryer.

I cannot find him in the 1901. There is a Walter King as a boarder in Derby in 1901 born 1880 in Surrey?

On my grandfather's, Walter Arthur King baptism record in 1906 he is a Horsekeeper.

There is only one Walter George King in the 1881 census: born c.1880 Lambeth, son of James Timothy King, marine store dealer, of Regent Street Lambeth.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Still living at same address in 1891; however, father deceased, and mother marine store dealer.

One other thing to consider is the possibility of serving in the Boer War. I have several ancestors " missing" in the 1901 census; discovered by various means they were in South Africa, one in the railways, the other in the military. Still looking for the third......

Yes, I have found that family but I have no way of knowing if James Timothy is his father. How do I know he wasn't born just plain Walter King and added George later.

That is true. Our ancestors very inconveniently added or dropped names; sometimes I am sure just to stump us :) .
Reading back through the posts on this thread, it is interesting that your Walter was a fishfryer in 1911, and a horse keeper in 1906. That leans toward my theory of being absent in 1901, possibly in South Africa looking after horses.
Perhaps a search for the widow of James Timothy King, or the siblings in that family, just to rule that Walter in or out.
