1861 Census Lookup
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 14:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if someone out there is able to do a census lookup for 1861. I have found this person on the 1851 & 1871 census, but do not have access to the 1861 one - it may show some information.

Robert Sanders (living Newton, Wamphray) on both the 1851 & 1871 census. He will be approx 88 years of age & a master shoemaker, so it is very likely that he will be on the 1861 Wamphray census. I believe he was born in Lochmaben parish. It should show him as a widower - unless he remarried. If it isn't too much bother, is it possible to let me know the other "Sanders" listed in Wamphray parish at that time as well - there is a strong possibility that they are all connected - just trying to tie everything together. He had a son called John, shoemaker also (born c1803 @ Wamphray) and daughter Elspeth, dressmaker (born c1819 @ Wamphray).

Any help would be gratefully appreciated and thankyou in advance for your co-operation.

Kind regards
Diane

Hiya Diane,

You've got very very lucky  ;D  I went the library tonight and managed to get onto the Wamphray film.

William  S  Un  30  Surgeon (Glasgow)  Wamphray DMS

1861
Wamphray
ED: 2 P: 9

Pudicles (?!) of Newton

Name: SAUNDERS

Robert  H  W  89  Shoemaker  Lochmaben DMS
John    S  Un  58  Shoemaker  Wamphray DMS
Elspeth  D  Un  44  Domestic Servant  Wamphray DMS
Thomas  Gson  Un  18  Railway Lab  Wamphray DMS
James  Gson  Un  14  Tailor's App.  Wamphray DMS
John  Gson  4                 Wamphray DMS
Henry Gson  1                 Wamphray DMS

MI from Gilchrist's pre 1855 memorials transcriptions:

72. In Memory of James son of William Sanders, surgeon in Wamphray and Mary Jardine died 4th May 1855 at Ellesmere Scarboro Canada West - no age given (then post 1855 inscriptions)

Don't know if the surgeons are related but thought I'd check the Gilchrist and they were mentioned so I included them.

Gilchrist only includes pre 1855 inscriptions.

Hope these help,
Pam

Hi Pam,
Thanks very much for the information. At the moment I haven't made any positive connection with the surgeon, although further down my Sa(u)nders line there is an Archibald Sanders who was a doctor/surgeon - so anything is possible.
With regards to Robert Sa(u)nders - he is definitely mine and I see he had quite a few grandchildren living with him. That gives me something else to work on now.

Greatly appreciate all your help

Regards
Diane
