Patrick Cooper, vet., Carrickmacross
« on: Friday 12 August 11 14:29 BST (UK) »
Patrick William Cooper, MRCVS, was b. in Dundalk in 1870 and d. at Blackrock in 1951.  In 1901 he was living in Carrickmacross with his first wife Margaret Josephine from Co. Sligo.  She had died by 1911.

He later m. a woman younger than his older children, and I think outlived her as well.  They're both buried at Carrickmacross with some of the children (by which wife I'm not sure).

My question: what was the surname of his first wife?  Can anyone help?

probably the best way to find out is using a birth cert for their child Charles H. - here's a likely match :

  Name: Charles Henry Cooper
  Registration district: Carrickmacross
  Event type: Birth
Quarter and year: Jul -Sep 1899
  Volume : 2 / Page : 353

1901 census return for reference : Cooper household, Carrickmacross

I'd say this is Margaret's death in 1908 ...

  Name: Margaret Josephine Cooper
  Registration district: Carrickmacross
  Event type: Death
  Quarter and year: Oct-Dec 1908
Age : 32   (est. year of birth    1876)
  Volume :2 / Page : 283

if this is the correct reference then she died around the time of Patrick William's birth.

1911 census for reference : Cooper household, Carrickmacross

Thanks, Shane.

Yes, Charles was their son, b. 7 July 1899.
He became a brigadier in the RASC.
To meet him one would never have thought he'd been a senior army officer,
but he was probably a good organizer.  The Service Corps was a lot less glamorous than, say, a cavalry regiment, and it was presumably easier to rise through the ranks if one had a bit more talent than the others.

Gill,

I sent you a PM but you may not have been able to pick it up.
Charles' wife Kay was my great-aunt, but I know very little about them as she not only wore the trousers in that household but was also not an easy person to get on with.
