Grace EXTON nee ALDRIG, Erlestoke c.1670

Has anyone come across Grace Aldrig b. c 1670 poss. Erlestoke.  She is the wife of Joseph Exton b. 1669 Sutton Veny, they married 25 Feb 1696 Melksham.  I have been unable to find her parentage even using the variants Aldridge, Aldredge, Aldrich.  There is also a monument to her in St Leonard's churchyard (Sutton Veny), now listed by English Heritage and which is apparently beginning to sink.

Any information about either the Aldrig or the Exton family would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steph, unfortunately I was unable to find anything about Grace Aldrig, etc in Erlestoke PRs.   I did however confirm her marriage in Melksham - 25 Feb 1796 Joseph Exten of Hatchbury and Grace Aldrig of Earl Stoake.

Sutton Veney yielded a little more information which may be relevant............

Hello Steph,

This may be a red-herring, but worth a shot I thought.  I am in the process of transcribing some Wills for the Wiltshire OPC site, in particular Bratton, I am actually [now] transcribing the Will of John Aldridge of Bratton, (1715 of the top of my head, may be slightly earlier or later)  in it he refers to his daughter Grace and his grandaughter Grace, ( Grace's daughter) unfortunately he doesn't refer to any of his daughters by their married names.  However Erlestoke is the next village to Bratton so I thought worth a mention.  When I have completed transcribing, the will be available on the OPC site... I will hurry up! In the meantime, I will skip through  [the will] and see if I can find anything else that may be useful.

I've finished the trancription and have [5 minutes ago] sent the copy to the Wiltshire OPC site [Bratton].  I'm sure it will be available to view shortly so if you want to you can then have a read of the will for yourself, I'm afraid it offers nothing more on Grace other than her name  and as I said unfortunately her married name is not mentioned.  It does list her sisters - Deborah, Elizabeth and Mary if that helps at all.

A little more for you.  I have been [attempting] to transcribe the Will for Ralph Aldredge of Bratton ( written 1663 - not sure when proved) the Will is extremely faded and in some places quite illegible so probably will take me some time to get through it, however in meatime to let you know what I have found so far which I think may be of interest to you.

Thomas Aldredge
Margarett Aldredge wife of Jeffrey Exton
Children of Jeffrey and Margarett ( 4 named in the Will) Richard, Joseph, Elizabeth & can't make out the name for the 4th child - sorry

We know from the Will that Ralphe Aldredge & Elinor are the parents to John,Margarett & Thomas.

We also know that Margarett Aldredge/Aldridge married Jeffrey Exton and their son was Joseph. 

From the Will of John Aldridge of Bratton (1712) we know that John Aldredge was the father of Grace. 

This would make Joseph Exton and Grace Aldredge/Aldridge cousins.
