1960 - Brisbane Death
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 23:29 BST (UK) »
Charles Owen Smith died 25 January 1960, Brisbane, Queensland.

The 1954 Electoral Roll has him living at Griffith, South Brisbane, Queensland at 39 Manning Street.
Would someone be able to check and see if there is a Death Notice for him in a local paper as I would be interested to see if any family is mentioned.

Grateful thanks,  Faith.

I notice on the same electoral pages other people living at 39 Manning Street, South Brisbane.  I would suggest it was a boarding house.  Charles was enrolled to vote at this address for a number of years.

Snippet about an incident at the address

Google Maps Street View shows the house still standing.  A lot of the properties in that part of the West End/South Brisbane are still boarding houses or student accommodation.  I am not far from there.

I have checked the Brisbane City Council Grave Locator index and he is not listed on it.  Had hoped that if he had been buried it might have been with family,

Is this the same man that served in WW1 and has his service record digitised on the ANZAC site??

Cheers

According to the digitised WW1 record, Charles Owen SMITH was 34 years 3 months in Aug 1915 so born May 1881.

Quote

SMITH Charles Owen born England aged 78 years

I would think it is the same man taking into account the info on death certs is only as good as the knowledge of the informant.

Thank you karenlee and cando, I thought it might be a Boarding House as there was another Smith and a Smythe living there.
I have his WW1 War Record, he was unmarried then and after the war returned to Mackay, Brisbane where his brother Alfred Cecil Arbuthnott Smith and his wife were living. The Mackay FHS helped me with all of Alfred's data and then this Charles Owen Smith turned up.
A descendant in England has the Family Bible and has since contacted me with all the births which were in Ceylon. Yes, that other post on another Rootschat Board is mine.

As one Queensland Death entry had ???for parents and place of Birth I doubted if he had married. I also wondered if the Returned Services Assoc. took responsibility for his Funeral and Death Notice or if he was a member.

Grateful thanks - Faith

Hi Barrie

He may have been cremated at Mt Thompson, a very large crematorium which was established in 1934. Until 1970 it was the only crematorium serving the Brisbane area. Unfortunately their records are not on line. They do have a contact facility on the following website. Perhaps they may be able to give you some information if Charles Owen Smith was cremated there.
