Wife of Reverend Bickerton of Ewhurst, Surrey
« on: Sunday 14 August 11 09:06 BST (UK) »
The Reverend Edward Bickerton married as his second wife 24 Aug 1771 at Ewhurst, Surrey, Frances Jackson, would it be known if the marriage register recorded any details about her?
She was said to have been born in Virginia, and I am wondering how she came to be in Ewhurst, she died there on 16 May 1809, is there any memorial to her in the church yard, and if a burial entry would it have been likely to give her age?
Thanks Colin

I presume you have the Allegation for the Marriage Licence for his first marriage - I know it's not what you asked for, but here it is in case you haven't seen it:

27 Apr., 1756. Edward Bickerton of Ewhurst, co. Surry, abode
1 month, clerk, bachelor, 24, and Maria Anna Laugley of West
Horsley, abode some years past, spinster, 21 ; at Ewhurst. Louis
Benoimont of St. Anne's, Aldersgate, City of London, s. Sign, of
Edward Bickerton and Louis Benoimont. Witnessed by A. Langley,
EUza Langley. License granted by A. Langley, surrogate.

Hi

An index for burials for Ewhurst does not give her age on burial (the burial register does not appear to begin recording ages until 1813 when the standard printed format came in for burial registers)

West Surrey Family History Society have transcribed the monumental inscriptions in Ewhurst churchyard and offer searches of their indexes

There was an administration on Edward's estate when he died

The London Metropolitan Archives hold the marriage allegation for his marriage to Frances but her surname is recorded as Henderson not Jackson. There is no indication she was a widow.

23rd August 1771
Edward Bickerton Clerk, widower, Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Ewhurst, Surrey , married Frances Henderson, Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Ewhurst, Surrey

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/wills/

From the IGI/Family search the indexed entry of the marriage itself confirms her surname as Henderson.

EDWARD BICKERTON
FRANCES HENDERSON
Marriage:  24 AUG 1771   Ewhurst, Surrey

Thanks all
She was about 36 when she married the Rev Bickerton, and they were married for about 38 years, but seem not to have had any children.
her mother died so it is said about 1747 when she was 11 her father in 1756 when she was abt 21, it was 7 years after his death that she married Matthew Henderson, i wonder how she managed to live, was she with her three unmarried sisters?
Did their brothers support them, Joseph Jackson when he died in 1800 made provision for the two unmarried sisters then still living.
