Stephen CURETON 1845 to about 1910
« on: Monday 15 August 11 09:09 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to find some family centric information re Stephen Cureton of Chaffey Brothers fame.   From all accounts he was born in Madeley Shropshire to John Cureton and Maria Glaze in 1845.   He was the third of six children and travelled extensively as a journalist.   He meet up with the Chaffey Brothers in America and is 'credited' as convincing them to travel to Victoria to develop an irrigation region, (SA's Riverland and Victoria's Sunraysia).
I have him marrying Annie Peers in 1888 in Victoria, they had two daughters,  Rose Esther  1890 - 1982 and Lily 1893 - 1977.   They married respectively -
Frank Toogood 1922 and William Hiddlestone 1916.
I am yet to confirm when he died, 1908 - 1909?
If there are family from these two ladies could you get in contact with me please.

Hi Abygail,

In the event that a family member does not see your message and respond, is there anything about the family which the Rchat team could assist with?

Hi there,

I am not a family member...

Have you checked for headstone information for his widow, perhaps his grave may be close by

Could this be the registration of his death in 1909

Steph Cureton, Melbourne, Victoria aged 67 years,  Ref number #13333

Victoria's certificates are very detailed, and can be downloaded immediately.  The ref number will save you around $1.

Thank you for the information and offers to help.
I offered to see what I could find for a friend re Stephen Cureton's early life in England before he started travelling and after the last public record of him in 1896 at Panton Hill (near Hurstbridge) Melbourne.
Stephen Cureton was a colourful character in Victorian and South Australian history, with him being painted as a less than honourable man.   If it is possible it is my friends' desire to present Stephen Cureton's side of the tale.
We now know when and where he was born, that he married and had a family in Australia.   This makes him more real if that doesn't sound too corny.
Which is why I made the inquiry to the possibility of descendants reading this.

TROVE has a death notice for Annie CURETON, 1939.  She is buried at St Helena (Greensborough), so perhaps he is there as well.

An In Memoriam notice in 1940 says she died 'by accident'.

Can't see any mention of his death on TROVE but there are plenty of other mentions for him.

This is the marriage of ROSE CURETON

TOOGOOD  Frank Douglas
CURETON  Rose Esther
Year 1922
Registration  8810

This link willl take you to a death notice for a child of the couple in 1930 named Muriel Edith.  She was 3 years old.

The item mentions also her 2 brothers by name. It gives their address at the time.

It seems FRANK was generally known as DOUGLAS
