Llanbadoc Inn and Usk
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 21:05 BST (UK) »
I am interested in trying to find information on the Britannia Inn in Llanbadoc, my Great Grand father was born there in 1878, I understand it is now a private house, the Roberts family then moved to Usk, again which I believe is only a very short distance away.
Thank you in advance

Hi again

Richard living with parents Richard and Rachel in 1861 in Old Market street, four houses away from the Kingshead Pub in Usk

They are then living in Maryport street, Usk

From 1881 to 1901 his family are living at Britania House

Do you need the graveyards looked at, for your Great great  great grandparents ?

Unable to find Sarah-jane or Rachel's surnames at present

hope this helps

Hi Steve,
Sorry for not getting back to you earlier,
thanks for the information that you have sent me, I am actually hoping to come to Usk later this month to a Griffiths family reunion, I also have to find out more information on Usk Rugby Club before I come down as I have photos' when when G. Grand father was captain in 1902.
My Dad has actually photographed most of the graves, they were all easy to find, they are just by the Church Porch, including Maud Roberts whose stone seems to be perched against other family members.
Rachel's surname was Dudley, I presume Dudley House was her family home?
and Sarah Janes was a Thomas born in llanbadoc.
You are a true gentleman to have sent me this information so far, thankyou for your trouble and I can assure you it all helps

hi Steve

Did find Rachel and Sarah marriages this afternoon ,the Thomas family lived in Britania House before she married Richard.

Glad your father photograped the graves , does he still live in Usk?, was going to go round tomorrow to look for you ...hee hee ....again...

I have passed on your interest to the present owners of Britania House and they shall be in touch soon.

You are probably right about Dudley House...something to follow up I would think.

I can contact the rugby club and give them rootschat where they can contact you. There are lots of old photographs on the walls at the club and Iam sure they would love any information you have or share what they have.

Enjoy your family reunion...and get back to me if you need on the ground leg work as Iam often at Newport records etc

Steve

Hello Steve
I have just joined this website, (recommended by my good friend a.k.a. Steve !). At present I live in Britannia house with my family and we have lived here for 6 yrs. I understand your great grandfather lived here when it was a pub and I am really interested in helping you find out more about the history, as we too, would like to know.
Bye for now

Hi Steve,

In your last message you mention that you had found both Srah and Rachel's marriage, all I have for Rachel is 1848, I would be interested to know where they married. Thanks for all this help. I have just booked lunch at the Nags Head for the Griffiths / Roberts family gathering on Sat 18th so will be able to go round the church and see if there are any more graves there.
Thanks again
Steve

Thanks for getting in contact, good to be in touch with someone who now lives in the old pub.
I was recently doing some research at the newspaper library and came across an article in the Monmouth Advertiser of 1890, my Great Grand Uncle jumped from the garden wall of the Britannia Inn to save a drowning child from 2 Bridge Cottages Llanbadoc. Reginald Roberts was only 11 and received a commendation from the Usk Odd Fellows and a testimonial from the Royal humane Society.
I will try and sort out any other newspaper articles I have that are connected with the Britannia.
