Cartwright from Edenderry, Kings County
« on: Wednesday 17 August 11 06:53 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for information on John Warrant CARTWRIGHT (farmer) and Jane CAHILL of Edenderry, Kings County, Ireland, parents of Rosanna CARTWRIGHT

These parents names come from Rosanna's death certificate.

All I know is that John was alive in 1849 but his wife Jane was not.

Any information on where to look would be appreciated.

thanks
Sunny

The earlier details of John and Jane are before the start if civil records so you would need to check for church records. See :

    Introduction to Irish Records

There are a few Cartwright entries on Griffith's valuation in Co. Offaly. The result are dated 1853 and all seem to be in or near to Edenderry - so could be relations of your Cartwright family.

See : Cartwright, Griffith's Valuation, Co. Offaly

Valuations look interesting.

A daughter Rosanne Cartwright was sent to Australia as a Potato famine Orphan.
Can I assume she would have come from a workhouse & did any of these records survive for Edenderry

Edenderry was the centre of a Poor Law Union, which was an administrative district denoting the area covered by an individual union and workhouse. These Poor Law Unions later became registration districts. The workhouse for the district of Edenderry was located close to the town and to the south west.

Not certain where any surviving records (if any) might be, but I'd try Offaly County Library, Tullamore or possibly the National Archives (Dublin)

Hi
Has anyone got a copy of the book "Hatches, Matches, and Dispatches" published by the Omagh Family history Society and can do a look up for me on the Cartwright name at Edenderry Church of Ireland.

thanks
Derek

I think that book you referred may be related to the Edenderry in Co. Tyrone, near Omagh.

Yes, it is County Tyrone. Here's the link to the Society's website:
