1851 Census Chalfont St Giles - Look up please
« on: Wednesday 17 August 11 10:54 BST (UK) »
I do have some census details for my ancestor William Titshall who was a miller in 1851 census  - Reg District Amersham  Household # 94

William 34 Miller           bn Suffolk
Jane     31 Millers Wife bn Surrey
William  6 Milers son     bn Middx
Percey  4 Millers son    bn Middx
Maria    2 mo  Millers dau  bn Bucks

but I don't have the exact place; I would be so pleased if someone could look up the 1851 census record and tell me the as in the 1861 census (which I have a scan of ) the family is living at the Windmill (Household # 91) and the record is under the Parish of Chalfont St Giles.  (I can find no reference to a Windmill online in or near Chalfont St Giles)  The next two households on the scan are Outfield Farm, Outfield and Grove Mansion.

I have all the other details of births and baptisms and marriage for the family and am starting to look at how their life was here in Bucks as opposed to later when they had moved back to London.

thanks

Hi Karenlee

I have one small favour; I had this William Titshall, Miller,  as born Suffolk for the 1851 census but have just seen a note that it may have been Norfolk - I would be ever so grateful if you could confirm for me.  I know he was baptised in Woodbridge, Suffolk.  I've got the 1861 scan and it says this but if he was born in Norfolk I think I've found his mother living there in the census.

regards Karen

Hi

The 1851 Census entry shows William as being born Suffolk Woodbridge, as does the 1861 and the 1871.

Thanks very much for that Karenlee - I thought I was going spare..as his mother is very hard to trace and I had found a possibility in Norfolk.  Maria Titsall.

It's a bit of a mission sorting this family out too - after living in Chalfont for more than 10 years they had moved to Bermondsey, Surrey by the 1871 census and sadly William died a few years later in 1873 - I do know that they had living with them  a Mary Doe (1871 census) boarder occ Nurse from Waterfield or probably Wattisfield, Suffolk, and now tonight I discover on census index searching, she is in the 1851 and 1861 census' living Reg district Amersham, Bucks too.  On the 1861 census page I have she's not with the Titshalls; would you please be able to look it up for me.

Out of interest I've a lot of posts about the Titshall family in Suffolk boards and New Zealand...if you are interested in the saga....I'm just fine tuning things at the moment.

regards Karen

ps our local library was shaken up pretty badly in the Christchurch earthquake and I used to go look at Ancestry and FindMyPast there..sadly it will be a long long time before we can access our wonderful city again.

Hi

If you are interested, the area of these addresses is here :

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&sugexp=gsis,i18n%3Dtrue&cp=7&gs_id=1&xhr=t&q=hp8+4rg&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1024&bih=606&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x487668a0960e1573:0x3729f58052038caa,Chalfont+St+Giles,+Buckinghamshire+HP8+4RG&gl=uk&ei=1qR0TvvYMY2p8APZzpzFDQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBoQ8gEwAA

The map is centered on Windmill Farm (presumably your location).
"Grove Mansion" is now the HQ of the SSVC and the complex at the end of Chalfont Grove.
One of the roads at the bottom of the page (roughly where Pennington Road is) is called Outfield, so I'd guess is built over the earlier farm.

Best Wishes

Dave, apologies for the delay and thank you for your post below; it is very interesting to see the area where my ancestor was living.  Chalfont St Giles is definately on my list of future places to visit when I get over to England in a couple of years.

Hi karrienz,

A William Titshall (miller) of Alderton married an Elizabeth Smith of Woodbridge in 1791.  He appears to also have been called Fitfhall (Fitshall).  He may have moved to Hacheston (1825-30).  May be these were your man's parents, as Alderton and Hacheston are only a few miles from Woodbridge.
