John COBBOLD, born at Halsen (=Harleston?) 1715
« on: Saturday 20 August 11 13:34 BST (UK) »
Who can help me to identify the birthplace or (what I really hope) find the record with the baptism of John Cobbold  (sometimes Carbold) about 1715 in Halsen, Suffolk.

I reckon Halsen could be Harleston, but perhaps you could give other suggestions.

He married Fanny and lived about 1745 in Ipswich.

Thank you,

Tiemen

Hello Tiemen and welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Did you check the Harleston near Stowmarket PRs as offered to you by Charles Fuller?  If you had no luck there, we might need to consider other options.

You mentioned previously Harleston-with-Redenhall - is that still being checked or have you dismissed this one as it is in Norfolk?

Hello Pat,
Thank you for your friendly words.

Excuse for not noticing your reply on the other forum. I had not got an email that there was a new reply, so I did not look there.

I don't know how to check the Harleston near Stowmarket. Charles asked me names and date. But I haven't heard since.
I have mailed to the Norfolk Family History Society for there are kept the records of Harleston Redenhall according to the minister of that church. But I got no reply.

Here is the reference: http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/images.jsp?doc=OA175003260003
At this moment they are off line.

John Cobbold was executed on the 3rd of March 1750 at Tyburn.....

If you ask Charles to check the baptisms one or two years each side of 1715 for a baptism of John Cobbold, he will be able to see if he was indeed baptised there and therefore, possibly born in the parish of Harleston near Stowmarket.  It may give information concerning his parents names.

When you have made three posts to this board, you will be able to send and receive private messages.

I can then send you details of contacting Charles directly  ;)

Thank you Pat,

Here some other information:

John Cobbold was also know as a smuggler called 'Jiffling Jack'.

He had a cousin, who was also a John Cobbold. And I wonder if this man was the John Cobbold, who was also executed shortly after 'my' John Cobbold.

I know there were brewers with the name Cobbold and 'my' Cobbold had a public house in Ipswich.

Hello Pat,

Charles sent me a new message with his emailaddress, so I could sent him my question with all the information I had.

So I hope he can find something...

Thank you,

Hi
I had a quick look at the Harleston parish register today at the RO but could not see a baptism for John Cobbold about this time.  However I did find the writing quite hard to decipher so maybe your contact at the Norfolk FHS might have more luck  :-\

Thank you, Anne, for your help.

I am still a bit confused about Harleston near Stowmarket. That is another Harleston than Harleston in Suffolk, right?

And you searched Harleston in Suffolk for me? That is where he should be born (according to the Proceedings of the Old Bailey, when he was sentenced to death).

I had mailed to the Norfolk FHS, but they did not answer me.

If you could not find John Cobbold in the records of Harleston, he could still be born there, right?

Thank you,

Tiemen

I think that annes has checked Harleston in Norfolk, not Harleston near Stowmarket in Suffolk.

The one in Norfolk is a busy little town whereas the one in Suffolk is much less well known being just a tiny village.

Have you had any luck with Charles?
