Thanks for such a quick response and so many, I am very grateful.
I cannot remember where I got my original info from, it was probably ancestry or the geneaologist.  I have a copy of William and Lydia's marriage certificate.

You have A marriage certificate.  But I'm not sure its the right one.  The fact that there are two different William Mathers with wives called Lydia both in 1871 shows that there are two candidates for your ancestor.  Start with you and work back, its the only way to ensure you follow the right line.

My error!  I was confusing the William & Lydia I found in 1861 with the 1871 info a few posts above this one!
