Completed, with thanks: Death in Chambers St, Edinburgh
« on: Thursday 25 August 11 19:01 BST (UK) »
This extract is from a birth registered in the St Giles district of Edinburgh in 1887. I wonder if anybody can tell me what it says on the line above Chambers Street.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Karen  :)

Could you give me the full name of the person registered, please. I'll see if I can get a better copy.

Looking at the Edinburgh directory for 1886-7 and 1887-8 on the National Library of Scotland website, the only Society on Chambers St seems to be the Odonto Chirurgical Society at no 30, along with the Edinburgh Dental Hospital and School.  Could thr unknown word be O/C, or D/C for Odonto/Chirurgical or Dental/Chirurgical?

I hadn't seen that as Society, but I can see what you mean now.

Gnu, the birth was of a Catherine Miller Houston. Thanks very much for the offer.

Hi

It certainly looks like No 10 Society when enlarged and enhanced.

There is evidence that Society, Chambers Street (off Brown Square ) did exist. Discussed here:

and map (top right hand corner):

Thanks to Pels. for the map, etc. refs

Some more information about "The Society" as it was known:

It apparently got its name as land granted in 1598 from the town's Common Good to the Fellowship and Society of Ale & Beer Brewers of the Burgh of Edinburgh.  It was the site of the Society's brewery.  The Society itself ceased to exist in 1619 but the name continued even though the land had been bought back by the town.  The original grant of land was much bigger and Brown Square and Merchant Street later covered most of it.  The final southwestern corner and the area in general kept the name of Society.  The name only disappeared when the ground was cleared and the site used for the new museum.

Well, I learned something I never knew about that part of town before.  :)

I can't thank you all enough for deciphering the writing and the information on the area and Society. I am extremely grateful.  :-*
