Hi there,
To learn more about either William or Margaret KENNEDY, including how long they had been in the colonies, may I suggest you consider obtaining a transcript of their death registrations. These documents will show you cemetery/burial information to confirm if the Tilba sightings would be your family. They would also include other vital family history clues, including the names of their then living children, and that would also help you confirm/eliminate the known information from the guesswork.
NSW BDM online index shows these:
William Kennedy’s death registered in the
Bega district in 1890, with recorded GIVEN names of parents indexed as James and Mary #
2977Margaret R Kennedy’s death registered in the Moruya district in 1892, with recorded GIVEN names of parents indexed as George and unknown mother.
I note that if that is the migration of Alexander's parents in March 1876, then it would seem unlikely that the William Kennedy on the 1870 NSW ER would be Alexander's father, unless you can find his departure back to the UK and then his re-migration.
I find that NSW BDM certificates are quite informative, and that transcript copies of those are cheaper, quicker and contain the same information as the "real deal" certificates. If this were my family tree, I would be seeking a transcript of the death registration for William Kennedy in 1890, presuming the informant to be his widow, Margaret and thus for her to know the names of his parents, his age, his occupation, where he was born, his usual address, when they were married, where married, how many children of the marriage, the names and ages of those then still living, and other vital family history information. The d.c. also details the funeral and burial information, so that would help confirm/eliminate the Tilba sighting, for NSW d.c.'s also list the cemetery and the denomination and the name of the funeral director and the clergy.
Of course that d.c. could very well thus answer the main question in this particular thread .... for it would give you the length of time that particular William Kennedy had been living in the colonies.
Cheers, JM
Hi majm,
Yes, you're right I am guessing, regarding the ER. Thank you for pointing this out to me.
I am sure William KENNEDY died in Australia. His wife's death does not give the place, though. So, I hadn't better guess. You would think the family would know where Margaret died.
Would perhaps help if I knew where William was buried and if there is a headstone, as sometimes it can give information. JM suggests obtaining this info from the d.c.
