Hi Again

I was just about to post that info :)

Hi Cardiff was on my way out so had to type really quickly ;D

Have just come across this - in 1881 RG11 5223 97 2 George Baker and family are living at the last house in Slow Lane if you continue onto the next street which I think reads Stouk or Slouk Lane you will find ........

Mary Baker Head mar 27 Newent Gloucestershire
Alfred Baker son 1 Ebbw Vale

Not sure if there is a connection but thought it definitely worth a mention.

Regards

Z :)

Thanks evryone

I have the marriage certificate in 1905 for my wife's grandfather Alfred John Baker who at the time lived in Risca. On the certicate his father is shown as Richard Baker- occupation policeman.

I also have Richard's marriage at Monmouth in March 1976 to Mary Ann Preddy where again he is shown as a policeman, place of residence down as Abergavenny.  On his marriage certicate Richard's father is shown as George Baker -a miner. Witnesses Anne Hawkins (whose husband or father James Hawkins was the minister conducting the ceremony) and a William Phillips.

I believe that the family moved to the Ebbw Vale/New Tredegar area where they had a son William George Baker in 1877/8.  I don't have a birth certicate for William but I do for a second son Alfred John, my wife's grandfather who was born in November 1879 at 7 Roderick Row, Ebbw Vale. On the certificate his father is Richard Baker -occupation coal miner!! His mother is shown as Mary Ann Braddy -probably misheard due to accent.

It is possible that at some time Richard may have been a policeman but later turned to mining. Is there any way of finding out who served in the local police force at that time?   The alternative is that there may have been more than one Richard Baker living in Ebbw Vale/New Tredegar at the time

Thanks for your advice it ius appreciated

Hi

Just a thought but I wonder if the letters after Miner are undef - Abbreviation for Undefined?

HI Z
Could well be you are right have put out a request on the common room topics ???
He could have gone to London with something to do with being a policeman and became ill with symptoms of being a miner, if he had worked in the mining industry being coal or iron he could well have lung symptoms. I would like to know what he died of ???
Did forestlea say he had the death certificate?
Of course if they had the death certificate would it not say he was a policeman but he may have died of a miners condition?
cheers cardiff ???

I think it means 'undefined' as no mineral is specified. This is from the Instructions to the clerks employed in classifying the occupations of the people. All Miners are in Order 21 Sub-order 1 or Sub-Order 3. There is no differentiation between surface and underground.

Thanks z, cardiff and stanmapstone for the information on 'miner un/def'. This sounds quite logicalo and would clear up a bit of a mystery. Now I need to find out if Richard was ever a policeman.  I couldn't find a record of his death in 1881, but there a possible death of a Richard Baker in Monmouth in 1883 at the age of 28years.  If he had been a patient in London during the 1881 census it looks like he may have returned home and died two years later.

I'm sending off to Monmouth for a copy of his death certificate. This will confirm whether or not his death was due to a miner's condition which could partly explain why he was in hospital in London.  If not, then the address and name of the person registering the death will be useful.

Thanks again
