1801-1821 census look up Upper Beeding
« on: Wednesday 31 August 11 09:16 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone has access to (if it exists  ::)) imformation from the 1801, 1811 and 1821 census' for Upper Beeding.  The family surname I'm hoping to find, (or not), is BEST.
Knowing if and when they are there will help greatly.  I think there would be only one family of Best there too (not positive tho  ::))

Thanks Mo
Best (Sussex/Australia)
Brown (Kent/Australia)
Milbourne (Australia)
Orr (Renfrew/Fife/Australia)
Livingstone, Bryson, Hutton (Hamilton, Lanark)

I have just done a search on Familysearch.org using surname BEST, place LITTLE BEEDING and timescale 1800-1825 then it has come up with 17 results in all, some which cover the same person......

We therefore have these births.....
George Best - parents Charles and Hannah Best
John Best - parents Charles and Hannah Best
Benjamin Best - parents Charles and Hannah Best
Philip Best - parents Charles and Elizabeth Best
Sarah Best - parents Charles and Hanneh Best (Hannah?)

And these marriages.....
Martha Best to George Douney
Elizabeth Best to Benjamin Blann

Just in case no-one has those I have looked at some other sources of information:
  • In the Sussex Poll Book for 1820 there are no voters called BEST in Beeding.
  • In the 1785 Land Tax there are no BEST families in Upper or Lower Beeding.
  • To further the information from The Mc; baptisms in upper beeding to BEST families range from 1780 to 1828, Charles and Elizabeth appear to be the parents of those baptised around 1780-1800, and James & Ann and Charles & Hannah are the parents of those born around 1820-1828.

Even where fragments of those censuses exist they contained no surname or family specific data. the first such was in 1841.

Genuki has a simple but detailed report on these early censuses. I cannot post the link here.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Thanks for the help - I was hoping that the census info is still out there because other Rchatters were able to help with Ticehurst census for 1801 and 1811.  Thought it was worth an ask  ;)

To fill in why I'm interested in Best family whereabouts in those years -

* Charles Best married Elizabeth Lilywhite at Brighton 7 Jan 1779 (both of this parish)
* They had their children born and baptised at Upper Beeding between 1780 and 1800
* Charles was a shepherd
* The family lived at the bottom of Beeding Hill according to an article from the Sussex Weekly Advertiser about Charles digging up roman burial urns in March 1800
* Two daughters were married in Upper Beeding, Elizabeth in 1800 and Martha in 1801 (whose twin sister Kitty was a witness)
* Kitty Best (or possibly with married name NYE from marriage at Brighton in 1802) dies according to family Bible - but there is no burial for her at Upper Beeding.
* Son Charles marries Hannah Russell in Hamsey 7 Oct 1809 (both of this parish)
* Daughter Charlotte marries William Stoneham in Hamsey 7 Apr 1813 (both of this parish)
* Charles Best senior dies 31 July 1818 at St John (Without?), Lewes and is buried 4 Aug 1818 at Hamsey
* Son James Best, wife and family have a removal order from St John Sub Castro, Lewes to go back to  Upper Beeding in Sep 1820 and it is confirmed on 12 Jan 1821
* Mother Elizabeth Best dies 16 May 1825 according to family Bible but I cannot locate a burial for her.

Re: James Best - born Beeding 1788
« Reply #7 on: Tuesday 11 September 12 03:24 BST (UK) »
Timeline I have for James appears to be:

1779    His father married Elizabeth Lillywhite at St Nicholas, Brighton they were both listed as "of this Parish"

1788    born

1799    the 8th child, Phillip the youngest brother to James, was born in Beeding as were most of the other children (1 birth place not known)

1800     you show him as a Sheppard in Aylsbury (interestingly this is about 80 miles from Upper Beeding)

1807    Aberdeenshire (one of his letters supports he was here but does not mention a date)

1808    Shetland & Orkney Islands (The same letter supports he "lived amongst" the islanders the but does not mention a date)

His will mentions him being a prisoner of war in France

1815    March 27 - marries Ann Goacher

1815    June 18 - Battle of Waterloo

1816    March - Mary Ann born
