Crimean War Campaign Medal
« on: Friday 02 September 11 02:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have found a record of an ancestor who was awarded the Crimean campaign medal for Inkerman and Alma, but in the Inkerman column and the remarks columns are the letters W.O underlined. Can someone tell me what they mean please?
I wonder if he was killed in that conflict, but can't seem to find him in the casualty lists maybe someone can find out please.
His name was Corporal William Burrows Royal Artillery.
Cheers, Mel.

Hi Mel

WO = War Office. The medal may have been returned because he was no longer in the RA when it was issued. If you can post better details such as his number, unit and preferably a link to the page on Ancestry we can give you some more.

Hi Ken,
thanks for that, I never thought of the War Office, his number was 1873.
He was in Captain T C Ingls's company.
I have tried to attach an image, don't know if it will come trhough.
Cheers,
Mel.

Other entries on the same page have a date indicating when the medal was returned to the War Office. In this case it looks as if the clasp for Inkerman was also returned. If you find his service record you may get a clue, or you could look at the muster books in Kew. It may be that he was in hospital for Inkerman.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for your help, unfortunately I live in Australia so Kew is out, also can't find his records on Ancestry or Find My Past. Last time I tried the National Archives I went round in circles and gave up, no problems with navy records but got lost trying to find army records, maybe I'll try again.
Cheers,
Mel.
