Advice on next steps please!!
« on: Friday 18 June 04 20:34 BST (UK) »
I have obtained a birth certificate which may (or may not), be the birth certificate for an ancestor who was adopted.

No father is named on the birth certificate.  The mother's occupation is given as domestic servant.  I can see four possible reasons for this:
(a)  The father was not told about the pregnancy or did not want to know the child
(b)  The father was the 'master' of the house or someone within the household and to name him on the birth certificate would have been socially embarrassing
(c)  The father was 'unknown' but the mother did not want this put on the certificate
(d)  The mother and father weren't married and he didn't attend the birth registration

Anybody any other suggestions??

Where do I go from here?  How do I find out more about the mother?  I cannot find her on any of the usual websites (see my post about BMDIndex.co.uk).

HELP!!! :'(

Hi Bel,
I did a quick search for your other postings but was not sure which to look for. Can you give a few more details about this post, eg years,  names and places. Some of us have a variety of online & other resources to check, so may be able to help.
Best

Hi Kevan

Posted a message in "Common Room" entitled "BMDIndex.co.uk" - info is in thread there.

Thanks

Have you ruled out Jocelyn Jones, March qtr 1906, Oswestry, 6a, 675 ? It is not so far from Montgomery.

I was making an assumption she was born in Montgomeryshire, but Oswestry is just over the border in Shropshire, so it's a possibility worth checking out.

Thanks, Gardener!!   :)
