If you search for J M  and Benson here - http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/DB.aspx?dbid=1686&pcat=MIL_AWARDS  - the top two entries should be for him receiving the QSA and KSA medals. According to the 1902 Army List he had a staff job in South Africa as an (Hon) Major. It also says his captaincy was dated 22 January 1887. The award of the Kings medal shows he was in SA for 18 months included 1901 and 1902. So the passage information found by Ady suggests he served there on at least two occasions.

The rest of the 3rd Battalion were in Malta. They were sent there to allow a Regular battalion to be sent to South Africa.
