Locke / Protestant
« on: Friday 02 September 11 23:46 BST (UK) »
John Locke   Married   Elizabeth  Cooper
Married  .28/11/ 1845 Dunkerrin..................................  Protestant.
Daughter : Elizabeth born Busherstown approx March 1851
Son: William born approx 1852. probably Busherstown
*Died as infant  aged 12  mths  aboard  Reliance on route  to Sth Australia. 1853

Is looking for Protestant records any more or less  difficult,   and as  there are no birth records for these children,   is there any form of record  for these births ?

Would it be likely that the church where they  marrried held a record of their births.

Civil registration of births began in 1864 so there will be no birth certificates. To find church records you'll need to know denomination (Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc.) as well as a location.

Thanks A.
Not really understanding  much about protestants,  my understanding is limited to  knowing they are   a separate collection of religions from the catholic Church,   breakaways  thast were not completely  in agreement.

But  does that mean when you say Protestant it means the one thing?
Or,  is there  different types so to  speak?

I know they were protestant for sure,  and if their  marriage was on the Roscrea register in 1945,  i can only  suspect the kids would have been  part of the same Church they were married in .

Excuse my ignorance..  are Protestants Baptised ?

If you wish to search for church records (as you will need to do) you can't search for 'Protestant' church records- you'll need to search for whatever denomination the family belonged to (or that you think they belonged to).
The Church of Ireland (which was the Established Church i.e. State Church) practise infant baptism and kept their own records. Presbyterian and other churches kept their own records.

Not sure where you got the details of the 1845 marriage record but civil registration of non-Catholic marriages (including those which took place in a Registry Office) were recorded from 1845 onwards. The actual marriage certificate will list place of marriage and other details-

An Elizabeth Locke, daughter of John & Elizabeth Locke, was christened in 1850 in Dunkerrin CI according to offaly.rootsireland.ie.
A William Locke, son of John and Bessy Locke, was christened there in 1847.

It's possible that it is the same John Locke, that Bessy is Elizabeth, and that they had two sons called William.  Perhaps the first William died & they gave a subsequent son the same name?

On the way from Liverpool to Adelaide SA aboard "Reliance " little William aged 3 died, and in Australia they had Edward John,  and Sarah Jane.

Would you  think  little Williams  death  would be reg'd in SA or England.
