Hi Jan,

I would have guessed the same as gortonboy :)  But I'm no expert!

I'd also guess at 1860s/70s based on the condition and setup of the photo, but it is taken outdoors or at least in a very "rough and ready" studio somewhere, probably in the field, so it could be later.

P.S.  I will move this topic over to the Armed Forces board where I think it will be more suited and hopefully you will get some more responses there.

The rifle has the look of a French Chassepot rifle with sword bayonet, the kepi is in keeping with the French uniform of the 1870s.

American Union forces in the civil war tended to use bayonets that slotted over the whole barrel as opposed to clipping onto an attachement at the side of the barrel. The frock coat of Union troops had nine buttons, with a belt buckle elliptical in shape, though in the early part of the civil war "uniform" was what you could find, there is even reports of Scots fighting in kilts.

I tend to agree with Ady probably Franco Prussian war era 1870s.

Thanks a lot everybody!

The picture looked American Civil War to me as well, but it is however found in a chest of drawers in Norway...!

Interesting French connection, the search goes on...

Another "senior moment"  - I forgot to ask the obvious... is there any thing on the back of the photo?
