Lee,

Speaking of witnesses ...

A Mary Weedon married John Sears on February 26, 1826 in the parish church by banns St. Peters, St Albans in the presence of Samuel Jackson and James Payne.

Do you have any known links to the Sears or Weedon families?

No Weedon or Sears link that I know of!

And haven't a James of the right age group to be a witness at that time.

Thanks for the thought.

I agree that 1851 says Maria 60

Have just spotted this on Hals, already got it?

James Payne / Ann Maria Knowlton, St Albans St Peters, 16 Jan 1816

. sworth)Maria 60 or 68 (writing not clear but think 60) 1783-91c Berkhamstead - born. 14/7//1786 - bp.8.8.1786 Aldenham!  (Not that close!  Is this likely?)   :-\

Are you sure it is Aldenham?  Could it be Aldbury, which is close to Berkhamstead

Hi. Didn't have it, will put it in the 'may be useful later' file.   :)

As you agree with Maria being 60, that makes the 1786 birth more likely.  We are more likely to knock 5 years off than add them on!   ;)

Hannah

Believe that the Aldenham bp was the only one I found.  Parents James & Sarah.
Marriage of James Nickolls (sic) and Sarah Bagley at Aldenham on 30/7/1768 followed by bps. of their children 1769-1786, all at Aldenham.
Do you have an alternative baptism for Maria at Aldbury?

Do either of you know anything about the St Albans Tabernacle Church which used to be in Victoria Road?  I've recently found that my great uncle (Edwin Francis Payne) was on their Great War Memorial plaque. (It's been moved to Marshalswick Baptist Free Church.)  Trying to fill in more details of his life for my family history.  Haven't found a photo of him yet and wondered if he might have been at a church event where they were taken.  Bit of a long shot!   ::)

Hope you have a Happy Christmas
