Hi Arranroots

Its a very useful search term for the 'Relationship to Head of Household' that I would never have thought of (even though they are few and far between - only 3 in 1901 for example!).

Still ... it got me wondering! :)

There's a somewhat more insensitive enumerator in Gloucester in 1901 who is quite happy declaring 3 month old Cyril Carpenter as the 'Bast*rd Son of Daughter'.  At least whoever is researching Cyril needn't waste seven quid on a birth cert in the hope that it reveals the father's name! :)

I was going to say that they are neighbours of my ancestors on the census - but maybe I shouldn't??!!  :-[

"Did you hear Samuel's girl is getting married?"

"Get away!"

"Yes, and her not even pregnant!"

"There's posh!"

This is my g g granny and her children including my g grandfather  below in the 1881 census. The enumerator has written "not in wedlock"or something similar to that "wedders" it looks a bit like too. Interestingly enough the LDS do not transcribe this last column.
 I think the enumerator knew her  for him to write that. In 71 she was living with her "husband" and first born children  using his surname , all the children were registered using his surname too, 81 they were living in separate households, mid 80's they finally got married, about 15 years after the first child was born.

This 1881 census she is listed under her maiden name too, while in 71 she used her "husband's" surname

ooh the scandal of it all :o , my own g g granny living in sin  for so many years tut tut. - I'm absolutely disgusted  ;D lol.

Ok I know 1841 is an obvious example of interesting relationships!

I've waxed lyrical before about the 1841 enumerator in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire.

If he hadn't been dead ~ 130 years I'd vote him prime minister or have his babies whatever.

For those who don't know he decided to use his vast knowledge of the village to list who wasn't at home on census night BY NAME  and WHERE THEY WHERE

What a honeypie.

I was going through the film tonight and came across some of his notes.

1841
Kirkmahoe

Ed2 p8
Harleyridge

...In house of AULD
Name = Agness Scott
Age = 60
Occupation = "a poor woman who was turned out of her house"

Same page
...In house of HARKNESS
Name = "a man unknown"
Age = -
Occupation = "kept here last night on his way to Dundee"

A later page we find
...In house of CROCKETT
Joan Allen 30 Independent (lodger)**

** Note at end of page "Jane Allen pro tempore with Mr Crockett"  ...

...was she now!

Yes this is an 1841 census where the nice man made sure it was clear who was a grandchild and who was a child!

Hi Cell

I agree that it looks a bit like 'not in wedlock' but I ouldn't stake Michael Howard's chances of becoming PM on it. :)

Are you sure it isn't some quasi-medical term for some disability?  Can't fully make it out, though!  Strange to have all those 'dittos' on the lines beneath?

Seems a bit harsh- unless the enumerator was a presbeterian!

cheers

Paul
