Thanks for that correction. I did think it a bit odd him going for the london regiment. These records cannot be taken as 100% accurate because humans are filling them in!

I noticed on his pension record that he had 2 different heights - 5'6" and 5'8"

best wishes

Can someone answer this please; I know that many service records for WWI were lost, and those remaining can be searched at ancestry. Were medal cards and service records kept together? So if one doesn't exist, then neither can the other?

The reason I ask is that a search on ancestry produced 0. Nationel archives have a medal card for Joshua Underwood, but I haven't purchased it as these cards don't have anything to identify an individual such as d.o.b./residence.

Secondly, when a man was called up/enlisted in WWI, would he have been assigned to a local regiment, or to one short of recruits? What would have been the most likely regiment for Warrington, Cheshire?

Joshua Underwood was born 1889 in Warrington, married there, lived and died there, and did serve in the army.

Any info much appreciated thanks.

I have actually recently been going through my father's stuff since he past away his name Barry Underwood, his father's name Wilfred Underwood and Joshua Underwood being my father's grandad.
I have found his medal which also states 3902 pte j.Underwood 5-lond R.
We live in Warrington so more than likely he was also from Warrington. And would love more info as this as really intrested me

Before 1973 Warrington was in Lancashire. The Liverpools moved to Bootle just before WW1. The Warrington barracks is still there on Orford Road as a TA headquarters.
