2011 Census
« on: Thursday 05 May 05 13:41 BST (UK) »
I was just thinking about the 2011 Census, and i thought that it would be a good idea to, after completing the form, to make a copy by taking pictures of the census pages. That way, our descendants will have a copy of the Census already avilable, so they dont have to wait 100 years! ;D

Good idea....Or then again I might just make up all my answers especially my age - it seems to be a family tradition!

Be grateful for the ones you have! There are no census records available in NZ at all. When I inquired about them I was told this:

"The earliest census was taken in New Zealand in 1851. Unfortunately 2001 was the first census where people were asked if they would like their census form kept and archived for 100 years."

In other words the notion of privacy holds so much sway (even retrospectively) that in 100 years time our desendants will only learn about those people who bothered to tick a little box in 2001!

That's absolute nonsense, isn't it. Time for a bit of stirring ...

I came across this the other day and just remembered that it could be of benefit of other New Zealander's researching their ancestors. I haven't used it yet so not sure if you have to pay. Hope it helps you find something

Thanks so much for that Lindanz. At first glance I thought it was going to be brilliant and then discovered that it is a site selling microfiches - prices for two I looked at were Aus$35 and $55:o:o

Don't think I'll be taking up their offer!

Hope this next census is better than 2001 as the place of birth etc was missing or something like that.  Had loads of irrelevant boxes to tick.  Did make a copy of it somewhere.  Who designs the census and do we have any input into it before it is published  ???
