What is the Davidson--a middle name?  If Ingram is her father's name is Davidson Mary Ingram's mother's maiden name ----thank you very much.

Hi Mary

Hard to guess where the Davidson name comes in from. Very usual for Scots to use important family surnames in the middle name of their children, but not everyone did. You would need to trace back to both John Ingram and Mary Ann Wyness' families to hopefully see the source of the surname (their marriage cert would be a good place to check for their parents' names).

I received the last post which doesn't seem to be listed.  I am confused.  Higgsy said that on the 1891 census James Bertram Sim was the son of John and Margaret Bertram.  Now lindylou says he is the son of Annie Sim on the Marriage cert in 1904 and no mention of father.  Could there be two james Bertram sim's married to Mary Ingram in 1904?  Thnks so much for the marriage cert.  James was a bagpiper.  Maybe the Gordon Highlanders were piping.

Hi Mary

Here is MY theory

1) James Bertram Sim was the illegitimate child of Ann Sim (birth found and marriage cert)

2) the 1881 census is him (I think Helen Robertson was his maternal aunt as there is a George Sim and Ann Murray having children including Ann and Helen around the correct time and places - see Familysearch site)

3) I think this is you man too possibly with his father in the 1891 census. There is a John Bertram b Wick on the 1881 census living in Aberdeenshire described as a visitor I think he (john Bertram) then marries Margaret (possibly in 1881 re SP)

My only problem is I cannot find Ann Sim and her parents George and Ann on th 1861 census (can find George and Ann on all others) AND I cannot find James Bertram Sim on the 1901 Can anyone help here? What do others think?

I get it.  John Bertram and Ann Sim had James Bertram Sim without the benefit of marriage.  James went to live with Auntie Helen and John married Margaret who would be James's step-mother.  Right?  Thank you.

....I cannot find James Bertram Sim on the 1901 ....

Possibility that James may have been out of Scotland (also possibly GB) given his occupation on the marriage cert that lindy-lou transcribed which showed James' in the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders. Second Boer War years were 1899-1902 for one.

Norma, agree with your summary  :) Just found some A/try family trees for this Sim line. Nobody else has been able to find that 1861 census entry for the family either!
