Further to my earlier message William, Ann his wife, and John his son were located in the 1871 census. William recorded as born at Takeley c.1816, Ann born at Henham c.1815 and John born at Henham c.1838

Probably not his first wife?! ;D

Marriages, March qtr 1868
Edmonton district    vol 3a, page 150

Barltrop, William
+ and on the same page +
Humphries, Ann

So, this looks likely from 1861:
Reference RG09, Piece 1119, Folio 74, Page 21
Moor End, Broxted

Barltrop, William  Head  M  44  Labourer  b Great Canfield, Essex
Barltrop, Susan  Wife  F  75  b Barmston, Essex

Great Canfield is under 4 miles from Takeley!

Thank you KGarrard, you may have hit on to something I was not aware of.

However several questions arise here.

I wonder in fact if the Susan recorded aged 75 is in fact William's mother or was the age incorrectly recorded for her.

What is the proximity of the Edmonton District in relation to Dunmow District?

I have a record of a William BALTHROP marrying a Ann BOATMAN in 1835 at Henham and it is Henham that is recorded as John BARLTROP's place of birth in the 1871 census.

I didn't look at the original!

Looking now, I reckon William's age is actually 66 - which makes more sense!

There is also a William Baltrop enlisted in the Royal Artillery, but born 1844.
Maybe he is the one getting married in 1868?
He was from Great Easton, Dunmow and was discharged 18th November 1865 after serving just short of 3 years.

I can't find your William in any census, other than 1871?

KGarard,

In reference to your post on the 1861 census you have said that firstly William was aged 44 which I can accept. You did make a correction and said that William's age was more like 66 and Susan was aged 75.

Could or would you check this for me again please as I feel if Susan was his first wife her age may well have been 55 and not 75.

ALSO could I ask for a check of the 1891 census pleaselooking for Ann BARLTROP born c.1816 at Henham and located at Dunmow Essex any any other people in the household.

Thank you Kevin for your reply.

Was there an address for Ann BARLTROP and Mary Ann NUNN>

It was interesting to note that both women were recorded as being single.

Ann was the wife of William BARLTROP who at the time of the census in 1891 was visiting his son=in=law John NUNN and John's two children whilst  Ann had her (Step) daughter with her.

Ann died in 1896 and in 1901 William together with his daughter Mary Ann was living with his granddaughter Harriet and HER husband William James WEBSTER.

Gets confusing somewhat ???

Earlier KGarrard referred to the possibility of William having been married before wiyh his wife's christian name as Susan.

Would it be possible please for a check of the 1841 census for a William BARLTROP and Susan and hopefully children?
