Birth Certificates ordering issue
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 13:44 BST (UK) »
I have trying to build a family tree and have found lots of information online as well as through the ordering of birth certificates, but to complete the tree I have found some conflicting information online. I suppose ordering  a few birth certificates will clear this, but is it acceptable to order birth certificates of minors to complete your family tree?
I am uncertain if this is acceptable or permitted, as I have only recently begun working on the English side of my family tree. Advice?

Yes it is.

All certificates (Birth, marriage and death) are public documents and anyone can order them even if they are not your family members.

The only problem you may face is with ordering very recent certificates when you may have to give more of a reason why you want thew certificate \ provide extra information
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Yes that counts as recent

the worse you can do is apply and they say no (unlikely)

I take it you know the GRO certificate ordering  site

http://www.gro.gov.uk

which has several FAQs on it that may be worth a look

I am unsure about the parents' forename, it what I wish to confirm, how do I go about that?

Edit: I meant to say that I am not 100% sure that I am on the right track, but mainly trying to find location of the parents and didn't find enough other data about them, barring names.

Whilst this is true in England (and completely wrong in my opinion), it is not the case in some other countries which have privacy laws which limit access.

Also, keep in mind that not everyone would be happy for you to have copies of birth certificates of themselves or their children
