James G Balfour
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 16:28 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information regarding my great grandfather, James G Balfour, who was born in Fettercairn in 1859.
I know that at 2 years old he was living with the Taylor family at the Raw of Balmain and at 12 years old he was in the Poor House in Stonehaven. He later lived in North Yorkshire.
Any information on his parents would be helpful.

"I am seeking information regarding my great grandfather, James G Balfour, who was born in Fettercairn in 1859."
George Balfour b 1855, Fettercairn.
Alexander Balfour, b 1861, Fettercairn.
John Balfour b 1872, Fettercairn.
That would seem to be all the male "Balfours" born between 1855 and 1875 at Fettercairn according to Scotland's People, although there are 2 births of James Balfours under the Catholic Register for the year 1859, but not sure where the birth/christening location is.

There is also a birth of a James G. Balfour, b 1866, Dysart, Fife.

Regards

Malky

do you know what the G stood for in his name ?
for example there is a james gordon born fettercairn sept. 1858 , mother margaret gordon
perhaps balfour  was his father's surname  :-\

Hello ev
My initial thoughts together with Scottish tradition was that the G might stand for Gordon.
As at 2 years old (1861 census) James was living with William and Elisabeth Taylor at the Raw of Balmain where also boarding there was a Margaret Gordon, who I suspected too be his mother.
At 12 years old, at the Stonehaven Poor House, there was also a Margaret Gordon and the age was correct.
And he was at Lundie Bothie at 22.

if you havn't done so already it might be worth having a look at the birth cert.
of james gordon in 1858
i doubt that the father would be named on the original cert. but there might be
an RCE(register of corrected entries) attached , think it's a red button located
on the index page(scotlandspeople)
it also might be of interest to see the address where he was born in fettercairn

the only other thing i can think of are the parish records which might name the
father  :-\

Hi
I have checked the birth certificate for James Gordon and although there is no RCE to indicate the farther, the address of the birth is given as Raw of Balmain, where I know from the 1961 census that both James G Balfour and Margaret Gordon were living.

If you can find his marriage and/or death registrations, you will be able to see what info was entered for his parents.
