14677 Alexander FLECK MM 16 Highland Light Infantry
« on: Friday 16 September 11 20:10 BST (UK) »
Hi guys

I have a Military Medal which was awarded to 14677 Alexander FLECK of the 16th Highland Light Infantry. His medal card indicates that he died, Killed in Action.

What more can I discover about him?  I would dearly like to see the citation for the award of the MM and know the circumstances of his death.

I believe the CWGC site has him mistranscribed as Andrew (Andrew K FLECK - his middle name was Kelso) and he died 1st July 1916. It could be that the memorial has his name wrong also - I have written to them to enquire.

Can anyone advise please?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Your best bet on finding a citation or reason for award is probably the local papers of the time...Citations are rare most are lost.
The Unit War Diary may give some info...The act is usually about 3 months from deed to London Gazette entry...He is an early MM award as it was only instituted in 1916.

There is a book been written at the moment on every MM winner there is info on the British Medal Forum  so that may help?

Ill have a look see what i can see

http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/13056/pages/443

Heres his Gazette early 1917..
This Gazette has lads who were KIA from July 1st onwards and earned their MMs prior to deaths(this is according to the Great War Medal Collectors Companion..newly published)

So papers and War Diary seem the way ahead...HLI museum may be able to help

CWGC would need official records to change any details as info was collected from families in the 20s...Be nice of them to annotate entry with his MM award too
Good luck

Problem is that many families never responded which explains some of the very basic entries and some uncorrected errors. In this case the official death record indexes him as Alexander and is based on a Service Return.  That should be good enough for CWGC.
