British Indian Madras - Ellen Cremer
« on: Friday 16 September 11 22:41 BST (UK) »
My great great great grandmother was called Ellen (born abt 1814, died ?) and was married to Henry Cremer. In every census record, her birth place is shown as Madras, India. However I can't seem to get any further with any information about her. Her daughter, my great great grandmother was called Ellen Harriett Stevenson Cremer, so I can imagine that my great great grandmother (Ellen Harriett Stevenson Cremer) got the name Stevenson from her mother's maiden name. I'm quite an amateur at genealogy - I only use ancestry.com, so when it doesn't come up with any birth, marriage records etc., I get really lost about what to do.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Flynn Theo

Unfortunately, the majority of the Ecclesiastical registers and India Office records held at the British Library in London aren't online. You'll have to visit in person and do the research there.

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are so can't tell whether you can make the trip.

As far as I can work out from a little digging around , Henry Cremer was a wine merchant from Chelmsford, Essex. His first wife was Mary Margaret Morgan (married at St Luke's Chelsea on 7th May 1835). Mary died at Barnes circa March/April 1844.

There is a marriage of a Henry Cremer at Alton Hampshire in the 4th quarter of 1845 and an Ellen Gabriel is listed on the same page.  Given that Henry's son Gabriel was born circa 1846 this seems likely to be the right marriage.

An Ellen Gabriel was born 16 April 1811 in Madras https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/MY55-4FM/p1

In the 1861 census Ellen Cremer has her sister Jane Gabriel with her in Ham. That seems fairly conclusive proof that Ellen was born Ellen Gabriel. Now you have to find the link between the Gabriels and the Stevensons.

Hi Flynn Theo,

We have gathered some useful links for researching in India here:
Topic: INDIA: Resources for Ancestors in British India

Perhaps you can find something about your Cremers there.

Good luck,
Bob

Wow thank you to all. How on earth do you find all of that out so quickly. Do you mind me asking how you found that Henry Cremer was a merchant, as I am quite interested in him?
