HI Perth,

Taking a line from the stell at the rear of Stockton Street and across to Newport Bridge, below the houses at the North side of Canon Street was the Marsh.

The railway more or less runs along the southern edge. Old Middlesbrough was built around Middlesbrough Farm, which was on a gravel ridge. The lower marsh land to the West being developed by the iron masters after the coal staithes were built.

Marsh iron works was in the 'Marsh'.

Best regards George

Google "Old maps.co.uk" and look for 1857 map. You will see 'Newport Marsh'

Best regards George
Scan at 300 plus for restores please. Scan at larger dpi for small photos. Don't forget to crop the scanner bed out! (Them's the white bits)
