Hi Pandora, the picture was taken in 1983. Thank you for taking the time to help. If you knew the lady that would be amazing. I'm still not sure whether it is his half sister or adopted sister from when he was fostered out. Anyway keep working at it. I have another helpful man trying to find out where it is too.

Thanks Bearkat, I will have a look at googlemaps later and see what comes at me, many thanks.

Thanks
Well it could either be his foster sister where I wouldn't know her name, and if it's his sister I only know her name as Mary M Payne.

Did she marry?

Was this her maiden name or married name?

Hi,

What you are looking at is a block of 4 flats in an L shape. The white plaque has the nos on it showing L & R, up & down. It shows no kerb because you are looking only at pavement not road. Racking my brain for a location as I do an awful lot of deliveries in Southampton. Iv'e climbed an awful lot of those stairs with xmas hampers.
The locations given earlier are all possibles. John915
PS will keep thinking

I know that there are several books of lists of voters in Southampton Reference library, however I don't know if they are as recent as 1983. I will try them for you the next time I go there.

Also, I think the house appears to be on/near a corner. The doorway to the left of Mary's head looks to me like a communal one (like to some flats) with the window at the top of the stairs. Also, I can't see a gate opposite this door. Unfortunately, it does look like so many that I must have seen over the years.

Fingers crossed.

Though I have had no cause to use the Southampton electoral registers if they are kept in the same manner as those in other parts of the country 1983 will certainly be there, it is records prior to WW2 where there is usually a problem. A full set from 1947 is available i believe at the British library.

My suggestion would be to send a copy in to the Echo Newspaper
(http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/) and ask them to help - that is 'The Local Paper' I think (used to be when I lived nearby I believe).
I'm sure someone will recognise it and be able to help.  The suggestions of where so far all seem  possible, I'd even include Netley/Netley Abbey. It doesn't look very Bitterne(ish) but who knows?

Hi there
Thanks for the reply and the message. I will send an e-mail to the newspaper and see if they can help in anyway and will let you know what happens. :)
