I think this was my grandfather - I wouod have been 8 at the time he died so I would need to see the death notice - I know that he was in the OLd IRA and interned with De Valera - and he lived in Golden Lane and had 8 children - my father was Kevin O'Brien who died in 1994.  If you read this I'd love to hear froj you.

Hi Dympna
Nice to hear from you, hopefully we can a connection.
I will dig out the death notice and get back to you. Family stories suggests that there is a photo of Michael with DeVelera although I have not located it.
Michael's parents were named John & Maria O'Brien. Michael died (death notice) 9 Nov. 1970, does that ring any bells?

Yes Eileen this is my grandfather.  A lot of those involved in the 1916 rising used to get together in 35 Golden Lane, in facgt a lot of arms were hidden there.  There was a lot of memorabilita inclkuding photographs which I believe my Uncle Joseph O'Brien may have.  Unfortunately I dont have anything. I believe there may have been a signed Proclamation also.  Has anybody else replied to your postings ?  Dympna

Hi Dympna
I have made contact with a few branches of the O'Brien family.
My grandfather Joseph O'Brien was Michaels brother.
I had heard stories about no. 35 and would love to find out more.
If you send me a pm we can exchange email addresses.

My grandmother was Michael's sister Norah. Their mother was Maria McCabe. I have info on the family history back to the mid 1800s - still in the Liberties. Are you interested?

According to the 1939/40 Dublin Electoral Register Michael was listed as living at 35 Golden Lane. Also here were Elizabeth and Elizabeth (jnr) who I presume were his wife and daughter. There were a total of 23 electors at this address including the Cleggs (Hannah, William and Ellen). Hannah was actually Michael’s sister.
Hannah died in 1962 and is buried in St. Patrick’s Section – Deansgrange Cemetery. Her address is given as 99 Clonmacnoise Road – Crumlin. Along with her husband William and daughter Florence the headstone also lists an Elizabeth O’Brien. Elizabeth’s DOD and age are not in the inscription so it would only be guesswork to suggest that it may be Hannah’s  sister Eliza (or Lizzy).
Although I have not made any attempt at making contact I believe the Clegg family still carry on the family business in Dublin.

Michael’s mother and father are buried in Glasnevin. John died 15 May 1919 at 59 y/o with an address at 34-35 Golden Lane. Maria died  10 Feb 1929 aged 68. Also buried here is a son also called John who died 3 Aug 1920 aged 40. John (Jackie) may have been a member of the old IRA as there exists a notebook supposedly belonging to Jackie relating to his internment. According to the inscription the monument was erected by Michael.
Immediately beside this grave is the Caulfield grave. Hugh Caulfield of 51 Mountjoy Square died 10 Apr 1919 aged 19. Bridget (nee O’Brien) died 6 Apr 1930. Her husband, Hugh, followed on 11 May 1930 and finally William (son?) on 5 July 1964. Bridget was the daughter of John and Maria O’Brien and therefore a sister of Michael.
