Surnames of England and Wales gives 29 instances of Slynes, 4236 of Hynes in the two countries in 2002. I know by definition that does not include Scotland, but in view of the apparent extreme rarity of Slynes i would concentrate on Hynes.

And, further to my suggestion above, I know quite a few people in Ireland called 'Hynes'.

I have tried doing general searches on SP
but there are so many with the same name its difficult
to find the right one
